Maldives welcomes 750,000th visitor

Despite the ongoing recession from past two years, Maldives Tourism industry boasts a fairly well business. All praise to the breathtaking beauty of the isles, the generosity of its people and of course, the dedication of the Maldives tourism industry.

On Wednesday (15 December), Maldives hosted a grand welcome ceremony for its 750,000th tourist of the year. How it makes to the headlines is the fact that Maldives Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB) offered a completely complimentary holiday package!

Special activities were held at the airport today by the board and the Tourism Ministry. British citizen Mrs. Daniella Ruth Selig, the 750,000th visitor arrived in the Maldives via British Airways with her husband and two children. She was presented with a beautiful flower bouquet and a sash. They were escorted with a warm procession of traditional boduberu beats and dance from the arrival terminal up to the VIP lounge.

Mrs. Selig is spending her holiday at Anantara Resort and Spa Dhigufinolhu with her family and it happens to be her second visit in the heavenly Maldives. Her first visit to the paradise was four years back on her honeymoon.

UK is one of the biggest markets to the Maldives with a total of 105200 arrivals to the country from January to November. This is a significant 8.3% increase compared to the same period of 2009. The 750,000th visitor being a British citizen is thought to garner more interest and publicity to the idyllic destination, especially among British consumers.

According to a press release issued by the board, the 750,000th visitor for the first time in a year is an indication of the progress made by the Maldives tourism industry.
